Be aware for nutrition at pregnancy and childbirth
Teenage girls, mothers, pregnant women need nutritious foods such as milk, fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, seeds, legumes and beans. All of these foods are safe for consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Mothers will feel healthier and stronger during pregnancy, if they eat nutritious food, eat more than before pregnancy, and more rest than usual. Nutritious food is rich in iron, vitamin A and folic acid including meat, fish, eggs, green vegetables, and yellow fruits and vegetables.
After giving birth, mothers still need a nutritious menu, in addition to eating more and getting enough rest. Nursing mothers need about 500 additional calories every day, which is equivalent to the amount of additional food.
During antenatal care, a trained health worker can provide several micro nutrient supplements such as iron to prevent or treat anemia. Malaria or hookworm infection can be treated if needed. Health workers can also do night blindness tests suffered, and if necessary provide vitamin A in adequate doses to treat the mother and improve the health of the fetus she is carrying.
If a pregnant woman feels that she has asthma, malaria or hookworm, they should immediately consult a trained health worker.
The salt consumed by the family must contain iodine. Iodine for pregnant women and children is very important for children’s brain development. Goiters that appear on the neck, is a typical sign, that the body does not get enough iodine. Iodine deficiency causes abnormalities, especially in early pregnancy and childhood. Mothers who do not consume food with sufficient iodine content can give birth to children with physical disabilities and / or mental disabilities. Severe iodine deficiency can cause cretine (stunted physical and mental growth), stillbirth, miscarriage, and an increased risk of child death.
